This is a test post from Word 2007. The blog publishing tool has great potential, but the most important thing is that it publishes clean HTML.

I’ve been catching up on some local blogs recently and found a discussion on which cafes in Wellington are good for meetings – i.e. you need to be able to have a conversation without feeling like you’re shouting.
I haven’t yet found the perfect cafe for this yet. We often go to Legato as it’s quite roomy and the tables aren’t on top of each other, but they often have the music too loud which makes conversation a bit difficult. Pod is similar too – nice and comfy, but often the background music takes over. The library cafe is ok, but don’t sit near the kids play area… I haven’t been back to Katipo since the smoking laws were enforced – I used to avoid it because it got really smoky upstairs, but now that indoor smoking is banned it may be better.
Anyway… the last suggestion in the discussion was to set up a geek cafe, where there’s good CafeNet reception, good coffee, and provides a good meeting environment – sounds good to me.

To celebrate the birthday of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Google have released a memorial logo depicting the figure of Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who made his first published appearance in 1887. He was devised by Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes is famous for his prowess at using logic and astute observation to solve cases. He is perhaps the most famous fictional detective, and indeed one of the best known and universally recognizable literary characters.
Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories featuring his creation. Almost all were narrated by Holmes’ friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson, with the exception of two narrated by Holmes himself and two more written in the third person. The stories first appeared in magazine serialization, notably in The Strand, over a period of forty years. This was a common form of publication at the time: Charles Dickens’ works were issued in a similar fashion. The stories cover a period from around 1878 up to 1903, with a final case in 1914.

The NZ Herald is reporting today about Wellingtonian Claudia Batten who sold her startup company, Massive, to Microsoft in a US$400 million deal. The software allows publishers to download adverts into online games which is estimated to reach a $US700 million a year industry by 2010.
Claudia isn’t revealing the exact figures but the sale has probably netted her more money than Sam Morgan did when he sold Trademe to Fairfax recently.

This is big news for those of us down here in New Zealand – Google Maps have just released a major update which includes street-level maps for all of New Zealand. Unfortunately the satellite imagery leaves a lot to be desired, but this is definitely a step in the right direction.
Although Google Maps doesn’t come close to the functionality provided by local site Zoomin. This has probably the best search feature that I’ve seen in an online maps service and also has friendly URL’s to make it easier to remember your maps, like this: http://www.zoomin.co.nz/nz/wellington/brooklyn

Dave Winer has just released a cool, new site called Share Your OPML. It’s such a simple idea it’s surprising that no-one else has thought of it.
Basically, you upload your OPML file or point it to your web-based one and it aggregates your feeds with everyone else who’s registered with the site and displays a list of the most subscribed feeds.
