Microsoft bloggers with a sense of humour

Published by under Infrastructure,Internet

I subscribe to lots of blogs written by Microsoft bloggers, and my favourites are from those who aren’t afraid to poke a little fun at themselves and their employer. Here’s a post from The Sean Blog making fun of the fact that when you right click a removable drive in Windows Vista, the kind “Safely […]

64 Bit Rant

Published by under General

I’ve been persevering with Vista 64 bit over the last few weeks, but I’m failing to see any benefit in sticking with it. Very few applications are native 64 bit and some applications just do not run at all. Microsoft is probably the worst culprit – last year they released Exchange 2007 and forced all […]

Windows Server 2008 64 bit Notebook

Published by under Infrastructure

Now that I have a 64 bit notebook, I get to do fun stuff like install the 64 bit version of Windows Server 2008 (beta 3). I wasn’t too sure how well the experiment would go, but so far it’s been pretty successful. Drivers weren’t such an issue as most of the Vista x64 drivers […]

Windows Script Host 5.7

Published by under Infrastructure

Windows Script Host 5.7 has just been released for Windows 2000, XP and 2003. WSH 5.6 shipped with Windows XP and version 5.7 shipped with Windows Vista so this is the first that 5.7 is available for the other operating systems. I’m not sure how many changes and incompatibilities there are between versions as there […]

Longhorn testing round 2

Published by under Infrastructure

Well this is interesting – my first, first-hand experience with Server Core. There’s only one command prompt window rather than the two that was present in previous betas. There is still a GUI, and you can run several apps such as Notepad, Task Manager, Regedit, which are probably the three most useful GUI apps I […]

Home office improvements

Published by under General

Since moving into the contracting/self-employed market, I’ve splashed out a bit on my home office setup. First I bought an HP Advanced Docking Station for my nx8220 notebook which provides full connectivity for audio, gigabit networking, DVI connector, plus a bunch of extra USB ports. Then I invested in a new monitor to upgrade my […]

iPod update from Microsoft

Published by under General

Good to see Microsoft and Apple working together to come up with an update for Vista that corrects some of the compatibility problems that have caused corruption on some iPods. You can download the update from the Microsoft Download Center.

SMS 2003 Service Pack 3 Released

Published by under Infrastructure

Service pack 3 for SMS 2003 has been released which now includes full support for Windows Vista, and improved asset tracking and inventory reporting. The improved reporting is the first integration of the AssetMetrix technology which Microsoft purchased last year and is called “Asset Intelligence“. I’ve used AssetMetrix for reporting in the past, and although […]

Aero blamed for Vista’s poor battery life

Published by under Infrastructure

A lot of people have been complaining about Windows Vista’s poor battery life and now the bigger news outlets are picking up on it too. CNet reported that OEMs are resorting to their own power management tools to try to squeeze out as much battery life as possible while running Vista. The finger is being […]

Enterprise Centralised Desktop

Published by under Infrastructure

There was an interesting download posted on the Microsoft Download Center last week, but I still haven’t been able to access it… This wouldn’t normally bother me but it intrigued me as it looked similar to the announcement that Citrix made about their Citrix Desktop Server product. I wonder if Microsoft pulled the download because […]
