Link: Trouble In Clever Domain Land: Bit.ly And Others Risk Losing Theirs Swift.ly
This is the big risk with domain shortening services. Twitter (along with Twitter clones) is the only service that actually needs a URL shortening service due to the space constraints of a tweet. The fact that Twitter hasn’t had this functionality built in to the service from day one shows how poorly planned the service was. Even today, it’s not obvious how to use Twitter’s own URL shortening service, so we still have to rely on 3rd party services.
